Finance Manager can be many things, especially in an SME…
You are the central cog in your business, the MD comes to you when he needs someone who is a problem solver. A reliable, intuitive professional who always looks for a better way to do something. Change doesn’t bother you, in fact you embrace it. That’s why everybody values your opinion, you’re happy to support other departments so that every arm of the business is operating as efficiently as possible.
Am I really a Finance Manager then?
Absolutely. You are the Finance Manager, with an Assistant Accountant reporting into you. However, you also get to be involved in how the business is looking to grow. That means you will need to understand operational strategy, whilst also working out the margins that the operational functions can work within. There’s also supporting the UK MD with the implementation of new operational processes, expansion strategy and figuring out where that expansion is most important. Also, you get to develop and support the Assistant Accountant in getting qualified.
Seems like a lot to do.
It is. Don’t forget, amongst all of that you still need to get Management Accounts done, submit your VAT returns, keep an eye on budgets and forecasts, post journals, year end accounts, submit payroll, approve payment runs, manage accounts receivable and accounts payable.
But you enjoy being busy and getting involved. You’re a hands on Finance Manager which is why this appeals to you.
Fine, but what do I need
ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification & SAP experience, that unfortunately is a must. If you haven’t got a qualification or SAP it’s an auto reject! Apart from that, you just need the right attitude.
What’s in it for me?
I’ve still got questions.
