Just come out of that same weekly meeting, where you tell the Senior “Leadership” Team should they make some of these subtle changes that will increase profits and efficiency. Instead, they look at your fancy presentation (which gets less fancy every week) blankly…ask you what the cash position is looking like, which was in the fancy presentation like 4 times, then completely ignore everything you just said. This then leaves you stuck in the boring meeting for the next 45 minutes listening to the Sales Director being shouted at because his sales team aren’t hitting their KPI’s (the KPI’s that you’ve asked to review so many times as you think their not targeting the right areas)…All the while all you’re thinking is “I hope my Clash of the Clans village isn’t being raided”.
You went into the exciting world of finance to make a difference to a business, influence the direction it was going toward…you were even crazy enough to dream of heading up a finance team one day. Problem is, this E-Comms business that “sold you the dream” also didn’t tell you that the MD was the real life version of Sacha Baron Cohen’s character The Dictator. They talked about a Google culture, loads of after work socials, networking events, ongoing professional development etc…Let’s face it, you’ve become a bean counter.
There is still one thing that keeps you motivated though. Your love of games. Train journey to work needs to get you focused for the day, so it’s normally Candy Crush. Plus it gets your creative juices flowing. Lunchtime, just needs to make you feel happy again which is why you downloaded Mario Kart. End of the day…That’s when the train journey demands Angry Birds!!! Let out that frustration on those horrible green piggies!
There’s a way to combine your love of games with your ambition in Finance. You can now be at the forefront of games development, actually work in the promised land of Silicon Spa where there are no competitors just peers. You can be surrounded by fellow gamers, where speaking about your love of games is met with enthusiasm not dull, lifeless question marks. You’ll finally feel like Super Mario after he consumes that magic flower that lets him shoot fire balls from his fist. Actually enjoy what you’re doing for a job, that’s the dream right?!?!
You get to work with like minded individuals, you’ll be listened to by the MD, you’re THE FINANCE PERSON, everything from board meetings to P&L reviews, working with Auditors and looking at the tax position. You’ll be involved in it all. Better yet, you’ll actually be the one proactively reviewing the business, processes and profitability and calling the meetings yourself now.
A few little points that the business would like to see some experience in:
