You open your eyes, it’s still dark but that annoying foghorn sound has been blasting through your smart phone so you know it’s definitely time to get up. The sky is still pitch black. You sit on the side of the bed for a moment, re-evaluating your life. You look on the other side of the bed, that’s where your partner should be but with how busy work is, you haven’t even been able to think about that part of your life. You’re up, you get your running gear on, play the latest Ted Talk whilst you clear your head. You are now ready for the long day ahead…Still pitch black, you get into your car and it’s time to embark on that long journey to the office. Traffic is a nightmare at the moment so you’re having to leave earlier, roads need digging up to be filled again for something, not sure what but it’s added 20 minutes to my commute. You get in, there’s 12 emails, 4 missed calls and a client waiting in the office for you. Not to mention that big meeting that has been called, probably something to do with billable hours again and how nobody is performing and we all need to find new clients etc etc etc…You somehow have made it through to lunch, the options are posh tuna salad and an orange juice for £9 or a Boots meal deal, it’s the 17th of the month, there’s still petrol to account for plus it’s your mums birthday, Boots meal deal it is. You’re so busy, it looks like it’s a working lunch in front of your laptop. There’s a few more meetings and a few more client calls and then your home free. Home time, except there’s some last minute work your boss gave you and the call that the awkward client wanted. You’re now two hours late going home and you get to do it all again tomorrow.
You’re up, you spring out of bed. The smell of freshly brewed coffee is filling up the house. You hear your partner downstairs, they’re getting the next chapter of your couples workout video loaded, knowing that your alarm has just gone off. You work up a sweat, devour a protein filled breakfast and now you’re ready to take on the challenge of the day. Business offers flexible working so you’re looking to miss all the traffic, apparently there’s some roadworks at the moment. Ten minute drive to work, you park the car as there’s loads of parking spots and spring into the office. Everyone smiles, says hello, laughing and joking all the way up to your seat. Boss comes over and says “what are you doing here? You should have worked from home with the amount of traffic!”. You’re excited to be in though, big meeting today. You grab some lunch with your colleagues and chew the fat in the canteen, head back to the office and get on with the rest of your day. Home time, you want to get a head start on tomorrow though so you take your laptop home and do some work while the partner is watching The Apprentice. You send off a couple of emails and within a couple of minutes the boss sends you one back saying “SHUT OFF AND ENJOY YOUR NIGHT!”
Which life do you want?
If you’re currently working in a top 20 practice, I’m guessing option 1 is similar to your life at the moment. The grass is way greener on the other side, join the dark side and make your first move outside of practice.
